Jung in Croatia—A Land of Contrasts
Forgiveness, Acceptance, Reconciliation
Annual Fall Study Tour | October 25–November 1, 2024
Study Tour Overview
Croatia sits at the crossroads of Europe, where East and West begin to blend. Its history and culture represent a cross-section of culture and customs dating back to the Greek and Roman civilizations, and continuing until today with Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Hungary, and Bosnia and Herzegovina on its borders. Building on the backdrop of Croatia’s conflict and recent conciliation, we will explore some of the themes that affect our lives and relationships- including forgiveness, reconciliation, wholeness, splitting, and projection of shadow — all elements which in one way or another mirror our personal, individual struggles.
These struggles and conflicts — personal as well as political — are driven by powerful archetypal energies. Moreover, such situations can deteriorate and reach a point where mean-spiritedness and hostility become a reality. Former positive relationships are sacrificed, fulfilling unconscious, archetypal agendas. These energies amplify passions and make genuine dialogue and relatedness difficult or impossible. This is true both on an individual level, where personal complexes and threats to our ego-ideal are easily constellated, and on the collective level, when issues of power and ego-security are involved. In general, these conflicts tend to be mythologized and take on a dramatic structure around the dynamic of good and bad, right and wrong.
Our 2024 Fall Study tour will provide participants with the rare opportunity to travel with outstanding faculty and hear thoughtful, dynamic presentations along the way. We will begin our program in the ancient, scenic 2,000-year-old town of Split, situated on the Adriatic Sea, where we will enjoy exploring some of its better-known sites, including the historic palace built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the third century, and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, considered to be the oldest and smallest Cathedral in the world.
From Split, we will drive to Dubrovnik — known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” — with the opportunity to view some of the most spectacular coastline in Europe along the way.
We invite you to join our distinguished faculty as we immerse ourselves in the ideas of C.G. Jung, explore the powerful archetypal themes of forgiveness, acceptance and reconciliation, and experience the spectacular setting of the Dalmatian coastline.

Tour Zagreb & Plitvice Lakes National Park
Tour Overview
Join us as we explore Croatia’s inland heritage before continuing on to the Dalmatian coast for the Study Tour. Our travels will begin with a three-night visit to Croatia’s lively capital, Zagreb. Not as well-known as other Eastern European cities, it nevertheless boasts a wealth of interesting sites, numerous fascinating museums, and a bustling restaurant and café scene. This part of Croatia has a lot in common with those Central European countries that made up the former Hapsburg Empire, namely history, architecture and cuisine.
Croatia’s natural scenery is one of the main attractions for all visitors, and its eight National Parks and various other protected areas and nature reserves attract travelers in their droves throughout the year. However, visitor numbers are strictly limited and so our visit to the Plitvice National Park, with a two-night stay in one of the hotels located within the Park, will provide a spectacular introduction to the best that nature has to offer in Croatia — and is a delightful place to visit.
Leaving the National Park, we will find a complete contrast in the landscape as we make our way towards the coast, with its warmer climate and dramatic scenery. Here, we will experience coastal Dalmatia — one of the most beautiful areas of Europe, known for its breathtaking views and a more relaxed attitude towards life.

Tour Zagreb & Plitvice Lakes National Park Pre-Tour Itinerary
Sunday, October 20
Check in to the Hotel Esplanade Zagreb, a 5-star, superbly-located hotel within walking distance of the city center. It is evocative of an earlier era, when Orient Express rail line passengers would break their journey here to dine, or even stay overnight. Our hotel is considered to be the finest in Zagreb.
This evening, we will begin with the opportunity to meet fellow travelers and get to know one another, followed by a welcoming, buffet dinner (included) at our hotel.
Monday, October 21
Following a full, hearty breakfast, we will spend this morning visiting some of Zagreb’s most important sites. Accompanied by an expert local guide, our day will include the not-to-be-missed Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagreb Cathedral, and the Dolac market — the largest farmers’ market in the capital. Following lunch on our own, this afternoon we will enjoy an excursion to Samobor, a charming small town located a short distance from Zagreb. In Samobor, we will enjoy a guided walk around this picturesque town — popular as a weekend break with Zagreb inhabitants — and a chance to sample the local speciality, the cream slice known as Kremšnite. From Samobor, we will return to Zagreb in time for dinner on our own.
Tuesday, October 22
This morning we will walk to the Arts and Crafts Museum and enjoy a private guided tour of the museum’s highlights. (Currently under renovation, if it does not re-open as scheduled, we will visit another of Zagreb’s many museums). Lunch is on our own, and our afternoon will be free with ample time to explore personal sites of interest, or, for those interested, to shop for gifts and mementos to take back home.
Evening free: dinner on our own.
Wednesday, October 23
Today, we will depart Zagreb and drive south through rolling countryside to one of Europe’s most stunning locations, the National Park of Plitvice. En-route, we will stop for lunch (included) near the small town of Slunj — known for its watery wonderland of former mill buildings alongside the Korana River gorge. Following lunch, we will drive to Plitvice National Park, where we will check in to the Hotel Jezero, a busy but superbly-located property located in the heart of the Park. Dinner is included tonight at our hotel.
Thursday, October 24
Following breakfast, we will spend the morning on a 3-4 hour guided walk around the National Park of Plitvice (a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site) with one of the Park’s Rangers. Croatia’s most famous and most visited natural attraction, Plitvice National Park covers around 300 sq km with 16 lakes, teeming waterfalls and deep forests. The Park is still home to bears, wolves and a variety of other wildlife.
Lunch is on our own in one of the Park’s cafés.
The afternoon is free to continue exploring the park individually before returning to our hotel for dinner (included).
Friday, October 25
Departing Plitvice National Park, we will make our way to Split, stopping en route to visit the charming town of Šibenik. With its dramatic setting, located on the Dalmatian Coast, Šibenik’s captivating medieval old town’s Cathedral has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is a perfect place to stop, explore and have lunch on our own. Then we will continue along the coast and check in to the 5-star Hotel Park in Split where the study tour will begin.
